Did you know that just one water butt holds enough rainwater to fill 25 watering cans? And that your average year of rain could be enough to fill a water butt 450 times?
Using a water butt not only saves you money, but it can also help reduce flood risk by keeping rainwater out of our local drainage system.
In Essex there are 36,000 properties at risk of flooding when it rains, and our underground pipes and sewers can only cope with a certain amount of rainwater.
Climate change means we are having heavier rainfall, which can lead to flash floods.
Win a water butt
Having a water butt can help reduce your risk of surface water flooding by stopping rainwater getting into local drains, so we’re giving away 50 free water butts each month from December 2018 to March 2019.
To be in with a chance of winning, all you have to do is take the pledge to empty your water butt before a heavy rainfall event – we have!
We need your help to encourage as many Essex residents to get involved as possible – together we can make our communities more resilient against surface water flooding.
The final day for competition entry is Sunday 24th March 2019.
Please check out our competition terms and conditions for more information on competition rules.
